POLEPOX-EPX 650

POLEPOX-EPX 650 is an epoxy resin-based, two-component, fast drying, high build epoxy paint containing zinc phosphate as an anticorrosive pigment, which can be applied at low temperatures (up to -5°C). It can be used alone or with different primers and middle coat of the paint systems in applications where fast overcoat and drying time are required to protect steel structures from corrosion.

Recommended Use

This product, which has been developed to provide resistance to different corrosive environments can be used in areas such as bridges, structural steels, and storage tank outer surfaces. It can be applied as a primer or midcoat in the paint systems demanded from C2 to C5 corrosion categories according to ISO 12944-5 Standard.

Health / Safety Precautions

Refer to the MSDS sheet prepared according to EU directives before use.

Surface Preparation Information

All surfaces to be painted must be clean, dry and free of all impurities.

New metal surfaces: Oil and grease on the metal surface should be cleaned with the help of detergent or steam, salt and other impurities should be removed with high pressure fresh water. After cleaning, blasting should be done at Sa 2½ level according to ISO 8501-1 standard in order to obtain the most appropriate result. Depending on the application conditions, surface preparation can be made at the St 2-St 3 level according to the minimum ISO 8501-1 standard in mandatory cases. The scraped surfaces should be primed with a primer within a maximum of 5 hours, depending on the ambient conditions.

Primed surfaces: Topcoat application times given for primer must be followed. In cases where it cannot be applied, the surface must be roughened before applying the next coat. Before starting the application, it should be noted that the surface is very clean. Before applying the undercoat system, the impurities on the primer surface from storage and manufacturing must be completely cleaned. For this, oil, dirt and grease should be cleaned with a suitable detergent, salt and other impurities should be washed with high pressure fresh water. After the surface dries, intermediate paint should be applied.

Old painted surfaces: Old painted solid surfaces should be slightly abraded to ensure adhesion and the surface should be washed with high pressure fresh water, dust and other impurities should be removed. Spilled, worn and loose surfaces should be mechanically cleaned at St 2-St 3 level according to ISO 8501-1 standard with hand tools, if possible, abrasive blasting should be done at minimum Sa 2, preferably Sa 2½ level. As an alternative to abrasive blasting, a water jet can be applied.

Non-steel surfaces: Consult POLEPOX POLYMER Project Group for galvanized, aluminum, plastic surfaces. Rusty surfaces: Consult POLEPOX POLYMER Project Group.

Retouching: The surface to be retouched should be clean, dry and free of all impurities, it should be mechanically cleaned at St 2-St 3 level according to ISO 8501-1 standard and retouched as soon as possible. There is no harm in using POLEPOX-EPX 650, which is thinned with the recommended thinner, for retouching.

Application Information - Mixing Ratio

It is a two-component paint and should be prepared in the specified mixture ratio, considering the mixture life, as much as the amount to be consumed.

By weight 5 : 1

Ambient Conditions

For the best results; Greater than -5°C during application and/or curing, Substrate Temperature: at least 3° above the dew-point, Relative humidity: maximum 85%. Good ventilation is required during application.

Preparation of the Mix - Application of Paint to the Surface

In order to obtain a homogeneous mixture, the paint temperature should not be less than 15°C. The hardener should be added to the paint by paying attention to the mixing ratio. A homogeneous mixture should be prepared using a mechanical mixer and, if necessary, thinner should be added to bring it to the application viscosity. The prepared mixture should be used within 3 hours (20°C).

Before starting the paint application, weld seams, sharp corners and edges should be trimmed. The paint mixture, which is ready for application, should be applied to obtain the desired dry film thickness. In order to obtain the most appropriate result, the application period of the new layer on top of the layer should be 3 months at the most. Care should be taken to apply a maximum of 250 micron wet film in one layer to avoid leakage in the application.

Warnings

Consult POLEPOX POLYMER Project Group for surface preparation solutions where scraping or mechanical cleaning is impossible. In order to ensure the best adhesion between the coats, the paint application should be done before the previous coat is fully cured. If the maximum time is exceeded in the application of paint between coats, the surface should be roughened, if the surface is left in a dirty environment for a long time, it should be washed with high pressure fresh water and allowed to dry. If POLEPOX-EPX 650 is applied at low temperature without waiting for a sufficient pre-reaction time, if the applied paint is exposed to rain or dew as it dries, hardener exudation may occur, as can be seen in all epoxy systems, leading to issues such as whitening and spots.
